Summary

In Chapter 3, Lewis begins school and his problems there make him forget the ticking at 100 High Street. Other students torment him because of his weight. No one is willing to choose him for their baseball team because he is not good at sports. Sometimes, a boy chooses Lewis because they do not know what a poor player he is. Most of the time, team captains are so desperate not to have him that they offer to play “one man short” (Location 465). Sometimes, Lewis cries. One day he runs to another field where he finds an old ball and a bat. He throws the ball in the air and swings, but misses.
