Summary

The morning after Cora’s latest beating, she cautions Leni that no matter her feelings for Matthew, she must be careful. Leni’s choices have unusually high stakes not only for herself, but for Matthew and Cora too. Still, Leni feels impatient for midnight even if she told Matthew she could not meet him. After her parents go to sleep, Leni remains conflicted. She hears Matthew call outside her window, and she slips out to meet him on the beach. She knows it is a risk, but he makes her feel safe. They lie down together on a blanket and look at the stars.

Matthew tells Leni that she could still be accepted to the University of Alaska. She tentatively agrees to apply, but she knows that Cora will pay the price. Matthew gives Leni a bone necklace he carved in the shape...
