Summary

Chapter 5 opens with the family arriving in Clear Lake. It is very hot and human when they arrive, “literal hell” (51). When they arrive at a park, a NASA guy is there to greet them and take them to their house, and Cal feels annoyed that both his parents seem happy, especially his Mom since “she was supposed to be on my side” (53). The NASA guy introduces himself as Brendan to Cal but calls him Calvin Junior, and Cal corrects him saying his Dad’s name is Calvin. They follow Brendan as he drives to their house and everything feels perfect. Brendan explains that StarWatch has exclusive access and full filming rights into the astronauts’ lives but they have discretion over when they can kick them out.
