Point of View
The novel is written in a first-person narration from the perspective of Adunni, a teenage girl from a rural village in Nigeria. The narration is embedded with Adunni’s personal expressions, interpretations, and emotions. The biographical nature of the narrative point-of-view can therefore be used as a literary tool to deepen our understanding of the events in the story as told by Adunni.
Throughout the novel, many of the character’s names transition from their given name as they would reference themselves as in the storyline to the name Adunni refers to them as. For example, Tia Dada presents herself as such to Adunni, but is hereon referred to in the narration as Ms. Tia to reflect Adunni’s own personal reference and relationship to her.
