The Girl With the Louding Voice Overview

Told through the eyes and narrative voice of a 14-year-old Nigerian girl, Abi Daré's The Girl with the Louding Voice follows Adunni as she pursues her true desire for an education. Being forced into various domestic situations where her worth and dignity as an individual and a woman are overlooked, Adunni’s narrative demonstrates the power of a positive outlook and self-confidence can have on one’s life, despite having all odds against you. As she frees herself from an underage arranged marriage, maintains sanity while being a slave to a wealthy abusive family, seeks out opportunities to educate herself wherever she goes, and fights hard to be heard, Adunni’s “louding voice” becomes actualized throughout the novel until people start to listen. Daré explores themes such as feminism, patriarchy, colonialism, sexual and emotional abuse, trauma, classicism, and empowerment.
