Chapters 4-6 Summary and Analysis
Chapter four, "The Enemy Within", is the first chapter in Part Two, which focuses on the son, Volodya. As Solomon's life as a communist was finishing, Volodya was out job hunting. He was rejected by numerous institutions and factories because he was a Jew. When he couldn't get a job in radio engineering, he took a job as a television repairman in a shop run by a Jew. While he was working there, a friend visited him and brought along Masha. She was born in Moscow on November 7, 1926. Her father had a great passion for books, and her mother was a wonderful cook and a kindergarten teacher. In the 1930s, her father died from tuberculosis. Masha had a Jewish background, but didn't practice any religion. She attended medical school, and it was while she was attending the Medical Institute that she met Volodya.
