Summary

This final chapter opens with a focus on Patricia. She opens the curtains and looks at the mist. She calls Beauty, who appears on the first call. She has not checked on Richard yet and Patricia can see her leaning toward him. Patricia considers just leaving him there and letting him fend for himself. She asks Beauty to go with Bheki to dig up Rachel’s coffin.

When Patricia stands in the kitchen a few minutes later, she realizes it is a poor person’s kitchen, that she has never upgraded it. When she was pregnant, she had imagined the kitchen would be the heart of the house. As she looks back, she realizes she has been ignorant for believing that she would always have a gracious life.
