Roland, Eddie, and Odetta slowly recover from their various wounds. They travel inland from the sea and slowly recover their strength as they get more green food to eat. Slowly, over time, Roland begins to dream again of the Dark Tower. Odetta's name changes to Susannah. Roland realizes that he might need to sacrifice one or both of his companions in order to reach the Dark Tower.

The greater conflicts of this portion of the series are resolved but the underlying problem of Roland's intentions towards his companions remains. Roland acknowledges that he has bad thoughts about his companions and that he would not sacrifice his obsession in order to protect them. In doing so, he sets up a tension between himself and the other two. Eddie and Odetta, on the other hand, grow.....
