Eddie and Odetta's relationship becomes extremely close. They make love under the stars and confess their love for one another. Because of Roland's advanced infection, they make a plan. First, Eddie will push Odetta to the next doorway. Then he will return to Roland with the wheelchair and push Roland to the next doorway. Once all three of them are assembled, they will cross through the next doorway together. Roland is worried that Odetta will transform back into Detta and ruin their plans. He cautions Eddie not to leave the gun with her.

When Eddie and Odetta reach the door, however, Eddie is worried that there might be dangerous wild animals around. He gives Odetta the gun before returning to get Roland. Eddie is convinced that Odetta will not change back into Detta. His own.....
