Summary

Chapter 17

In this shorter chapter Carlisle pushes Einar to spend time with him. He reveals that Greta has been writing to him for years and he knows all about Lili. He wants to help Einar, and he recommends that he sees a therapist instead of a medical doctor. The two secretly visit several doctors, but none of them can help Einar. They don’t understand the problem, believing that Einar is mentally ill or a homosexual.

Chapter 18

Greta and Carlisle continue to operate in secret trying to find help for Einar. After several months, they finally speak and reveal what they are doing. Bolk believes that he can fix Einar with surgery to make him a woman, while the doctor Carlisle found wants to give Einar a lobotomy.
