Summary

Jude returns to the banquet and goes to Balekin. She tells him Madoc is chasing some spies. Balekin says that if she continues to be useful, then he will reward her. Jude feels sick after betraying Madoc. She tells the reader the future of faerie depends on her perfectly playing a long game. Locke approaches her and she tells him to go away before leaving. Cardan finds her and questions a bruise on her jaw. Balekin stands and an explosion happens. Roach fires a fake shot at Cardan to draw the guards away. Cardan pretends to be surprised, but Jude is shocked when Balekin covers Cardan. Jude is worried that act may convince Cardan to turn on them, as giving Balekin the crown may protect Cardan.
