The Gangsters

The gangsters symbolize the lawlessness of the world after the disasters. These are a group of rowdy men who are looting New York City when Valerian arrives in 1986. They are violent and greedy, but are afraid of Sun Rae. They save Valerian after he falls into the water from the Statue of Liberty, but they make it clear that they plan to kill him. They are not overly bright or capable, and Valerian bests them at every turn.

1986

The original novel was written in 1976, and at that time, 1986 represented a time in the future. Valerian and Laureline are from the future and return back to 1986, where they find the earth in ruins and Xombul trying to take over.
