Alex

Dr. Juliana “Julie” Fortis, who spends much of the novel going by the name Alex, is an orphan who was recruited by the department to conduct chemically-based interrogations and torture under the tutelage of Dr. Joseph Barnaby. Alex is known by most as the Chemist for her work and as Oleander by the CIA. Oleander is referencing the poisonous flower. Alex is ruthless in her work, but she is moral in her reasoning.

On the run for the past three years, Alex has survived through preparedness and paranoia, until her old handler, Carston, offers her a way out: interrogate Daniel Beach to save the country from a biological attack. Alex realizes the move was merely a plot to kill either her, or Kevin –or both.
