Summary

The fourth chapter is titled “Water/Boston,” and drops back in time to describe a day Dawn dropped in to listen to one of Brian's lectures. It is an extension class, meaning the lecture is geared slightly more informally and Brian talks about one possible aspect of the multiple reality theory. In this theory, a “quantum suicide” experiment has two possible outcomes – that a gun does not fire or that it does, but only the timeline in which the gun does not go off is the person able to record the results, meaning the person would assume that the gun never goes off. The problem, according to Brian, is that the experiment also affects the observer. Dawn considers another timeline in which she and Brian look at each other and their problems are over.
