Summary

In Chapter 3, set in 1875, even though both Hannie and Tati know that the Old Missus will tear up their land paper if she catches Hannie, Tati dresses Hannie in boy’s clothes and sends her to the house to find out what the girl is doing. Tati recognized the hood cape the girl is wearing and knows it is Juneau Jane, the daughter of William’s mistress in New Orleans. Juneau Jane’s visit to the plantation is not a good sign since they have not seen William for four months. It was rumored William had gone to Texas to get his son, Lyle, out of trouble.
