The Rice Run Summary

Richard and Jed head to another part of the island, which involves a long swim in a cave. Richard loses Jed and almost drowns in the process. He emerges from the water and is surprised to find out the commune has a working boat hidden in a cove. Jed is unable to make the motor work, but Richard finds an on/off button, starts the boat and does not tell Jed how he fixed the motor. Jed and Richard realize they both use a lot of military terms, ETA, FNG, military time, and it is a commonality with them leading to a friendship.

Richard learns that this boat is what the Swedes use for fishing, and it has good equipment in it. He likes the boat because it reminds him of other trips he has taken. He thinks of his travels, and how...
