Summary

Chapter 40 is told from Viola’s point of view. As Prentiss tells Viola that Mistress Coyle played her once again, Viola realizes Mistress Coyle had wanted Lee to overhear her giving the place from where the attack would come and had named the wrong location. Prentiss threatens to shoot Todd if Viola does not tell him the truth but Davy speaks up, telling his father he cannot shoot Todd. They are interrupted by a boom coming from the direction of the Ministry of the Ask. Then, there is a boom from the west and a rumble that neither Todd nor Viola recognize. The mayor demands Viola tell him what the noise is but she does not know. It is Davy who tells them a ship is coming.
