Good vs. Evil
Throughout the novel, there is a consistent fight between good and evil, albeit in a variety of different forms. In the very beginning, Romany and Fikee attempt to raise Anubis but succeed only in turning Fikee into a werewolf who is killed at the end. Doyle believes he is lecturing on Coleridge for the good of literature but eventually learns that Darrow is using him for immoral purposes, that of blackmail, murder, and lies. However, in the end, Doyle lives while Darrow dies in his perfect, new body. Horrabin and his gang of beggars will do anything to make their money; whereas, Copenhagen Jack and his crew have at least some integrity, and it is that integrity that keeps them alive.
