Prologue and Chapter 1 Summary
The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers begins with the accidental, magical creation of a werewolf and the opening of the time gate of Anubis. Throughout the rest of the novel, the hero, Brendan Doyle, fights gypsies, ancient magicians, beggars, and himself to survive after a jump back in time as he helps his new friend, Jacky, fight a werewolf. Over time, Doyle learns who to trust and proves that mortal man can win against all odds.
In the Prologue, Amenophis Fikee arrives at the gypsy camp in 1802 and tells the men to move a very old crate to the tent of Doctor Romany. When he arrives, Romany greets him warmly, and the two prepare for a spell. Using an ancient book called the book of Thoth, their Master's blood, and several other magical items, Fikee begins the spell while Romany leaves the tent to wait...
