Part One - 1895: Pages 305 - 346 Summary

Juba has the group in sight but her mind doesn't want to believe what her eyes are seeing. She grabs Tungata and races up the gorge. Ralph returns to camp and gets drunk. He tries to write in his journal, but only manages "War makes monsters of us all." Elizabeth goes into Ralph's tent, and sleepy fog he thinks he is with Cathy. He comes awake and realizes he isn't. Elizabeth stands, blows out the candle and removes her nightdress, telling him she has always loved him.

Zouga serves four weeks of his sentence and is released. Jordan picks him up, they have lunch, and Zouga gets onto a train for home. Jordan returns to Rhodes's home but has not been missed. Two weeks from the age of thirty, he feels he has little left...
