Part One - 1895: Pages 196 - 229 Summary

Ralph checks Harry's progress at the mine, and Bazo tells Ralph that he only brought twenty men because the rest refuse to come without their wives. Ralph promises to fix the situation with Mungo, and Bazo leaves to get the remaining men the next morning. He meets Tanase on the way back to Gandang's kraal who gives him the royal greeting reserved for kings and a mole skin to remind him of who he is. They can hear the guns that kill the remaining cattle in an effort to stop rindepest from spreading further. Bazo questions Mungo's logic, mocking his idea that the healthy cattle must be killed to 'save' them, and Mungo is livid.
