Part One - 1895: Pages 150 - 195 Summary

Ralph convinces Harry to take Victoria to Wankie's country, telling everyone they are on a buffalo hunt, but he is really after the coal seam he knows exists. When Bazo leads them there, it takes two weeks to peg the claims and then they start a back fire to trap the buffalo in an area where a shooting spree then occurs. Ralph is almost gored, and loses a horse in the process, but at the end almost four hundred bullocks are dead. Cathy asks how long such killing can continue before all of the buffalo are gone, but Ralph tells her man will not be responsible for wiping out the buffalo herds. Instead, out of the north, the rindepest virus strikes and without warning, the buffalo are dying within two days of contracting the virus...
