Summary

In Chapter 1, the ferry arrives on the island. Tara meets and talks to a man named Petree Bangheart. Fritz, Tara's new boss, picks her up. On their way to where Tara will be staying, she finds out that Fritz has a gun to protect himself from bears. She is also told that she will be killing, not hatching, fish. Frtiz tells her that if she wants to go back, it would save both of them a lot of trouble if she leaves now. He does not need anyone slowing down the production. Tara thinks about going home. Then, she thinks of her father calling her a spoiled brat. She decides to stay.
