Summary

At the miserable Blackwell Island Women's Asylum, Sara begins to make friends with a woman named Natalia, who is also entirely stable mentally, and they try to negotiate the brutal conditions together. When Sara tries to make the cruel staff members stop commanding another inmate to dance, she is kicked into unconsciousness by the maniacal Nurse Garelick, and then placed in solitary confinement. While in solitary confinement, Sara begins to contemplate suicide. However, then Sara begins to effective meditate, trying to imagine idyllic scenes from her life from before the asylum as vividly as possible. When she is released back into the general population, Sara shares this technique with Natalia, and they are given increasing responsibilities among the inmates. The women believe that Sara will be transferred to a more comfortable hospital when her baby arrives.
