Summary

Mr. Camden takes Sara to the masquerade ball, deciding that they will explain that she is his second cousin (128). They explore the vast Rutherford mansion, and are forced to briefly hide in the library when Mr. Rutherford comes in for a cigar. Back at the Dakota, Theo and Sara have an intimate, where Sara reveals the sexual harassment she had experienced at the hands of Mr. Ainsworth as a seamstress in England. Theo listens compassionately, and then they make love together. The next day, Mrs. Camden arrives to the Dakota from England, as schedule. Upon seeing a newspaper report that an expensive, 16th-century knife was stolen from the Rutherford house, Sara asks to meet with Theo on the roof of the Dakota, where she asks if he had stolen it. He laughs, and suggests that a servant had taken it.
