Chapter 6 Summary

During the first week of August, there are two homecomings in Haven's neighborhood. First and of little importance to anyone else is Casey Melvin, Haven's best friend, who returns from 4-H camp with lots to tell about her new, long-distance boyfriend, Rick, from Hershey, PA. Casey shows Haven pictures from camp and talks incessantly about how much she misses Rick. She also informs Haven that Gwendolyn Rogers came home because she has a nervous breakdown after being badly hurt by a man and the modeling industry. When Casey's mom knocks on the door, Casey flicks her cigarette out the window, sparking a fire in the gutter, and after Mrs. Melvin smells smoke, an argument ensues during which Haven is asked to go home. Haven sees Sumner again at the mall later that week while she is on her break. He drives the security...
