Summary

In Chapter 17, Jim strikes a deal with Teancum, saying he will help Teancum's cause now if Teancum promises to help rescue Jenny “when it comes time” (Location 2886). Teancum agrees. Jim is amazed that all the young men – barely older than Jim and Garth – are proficient with their weapons. Jim spends time with Menochin who goes about her chores, including cooking and weaving. Jim thinks about the possibility of a future with Menochin and can tell she is thinking about it as well.

That afternoon, Jim and Garth are escorted to the city where they are to identify men accused of being conspirators in the assassinations. Jim is awestruck by Moroni and barely mumbles a reply when Moroni thanks them. Jim notes that the air feels “emptier” once Moroni leaves. Menochin makes dinner for Jim and Garth, though Garth soon feels out of place...
