Chapters 3-4 Summary

The sheriff, James Galton, stares at Catherine with suspicion until he realizes that she is just as shocked as everyone else. Galton is relieved by Catherine's reaction. Catherine is interviewed by the coroner's jury and then Galton has her driven back to the station to give her station. Before she leaves, Carl speaks to Catherine once more. Carl apologizes to her for the fact that she found the body and then asks if she has settled all her father's affairs with the young doctor. Catherine answers in the affirmative before leaving the scene with one of Galton's deputies. The young black man who takes Catherine's statement turns out to be the son of the Linton family maid from Catherine's childhood. This makes them both uncomfortable despite Catherine's deep affection for Betty.
