Returned Letter

A letter Annie wrote to Keith is returned to her at the beginning of the novel causing her to believe Keith is dead.

Letter to Annie

Annie breaks into Keith's house and finds a letter he wrote to her explaining why he must leave town. However, instead of leaving town, Keith begins an affair with Annie.

Teddy Bear

When Annie and Keith run away together, Annie takes with her a teddy bear Keith bought her when they were first lovers, one of many items she kept hidden at her sister's house.

Rifle

Annie steals one of Cliff's rifles in an attempt to kill him for years of cruelty and for his numerous affairs.

Pistol

Keith keeps a pistol from his spy days in the farmhouse, but it is stolen while he is in Washington, DC. Keith suspects Cliff took the gun.
