Summary

Chapter 1: Joost begins with a guard named Joost trying to prepare what he wants to say to his crush, Anya. It is revealed that he patrols the house of Councilman Hoede. Henrik and Rutgar arrive and mock Joost. He heads to the Grisha workshop but only finds Retvenko who says Hoede came for Yuri and Anya. Retvenko sends him away and Joost follows Rutger to the boathouse. Joost was told to no longer go near the boathouse due to construction, but he does not see any signs of it.

He sees Anya sitting at a table across from a boy. Hoede arrives. Joost hears that something happened to Yuri, but Hoede says that Anya is not aggressive. A guard cuts the boy’s arm and Anya heals him. Hoede calls for a drug called jurda parem and demands...
