Emma Price

Emma Price is the main character and narrator of the majority of the novel. She is the mother of Aiden and wife of Jake. Emma got pregnant with Aiden by her boyfriend, Rob, when she was only eighteen. She raised him as a single mother though Rob was active in Aiden’s life.

Emma describes the way that her life went out of her control when Aiden went missing during a freak flash flood. Even though the reader does not understand in the beginning of the novel that Emma is serious in her claim that someone else took charge of her life, both Emma and the reader learn at the end of the novel that her husband, Jake, manipulated her life so that he could break her and make her dependent on him.
