Summary

In Chapter 19, on the way home, Emma bought copies of every newspaper she could find. She noticed the pitying looks by the people she saw and remembered it had been the same way when Aiden originally disappeared. At home, she sent Denise to watch television with Aiden while she read through the papers. By the time Jake arrived home, Emma had read all the accounts in which the press accused him of having “illicit affairs with underage schoolgirls” (172). Jake reminded Emma that he had told her she needed to read the newspapers so she would be aware of the lies that were being spread.
