1-3 Summary

The novel begins on the planet Kalgan. The mutant creature, the Mule, has defeated the Foundation and in five years has become leader of the Galaxy. The reason for his rapid rise to power is his ability to control and condition the minds of individuals. His current General, Han Pritcher, is one of the men he calls his converted. Originally, Han was a member of the Foundation. However, when he tried to assassinate the Mule, the Mule overpowered Han's mind. Now Han remembers his past only with embarrassment and will do anything to prove his loyalty to his new master.
