April 25, 1979, Pages 43-71 Summary

On April 25, called the second day of the "season," twenty-eight-year-old Peter Macdonald rides his ten-speed. He is just considering that a swim in the Caribbean is a great idea, but admitting that he is very tired, when he rounds a sharp corner and sees Damian Rose. Rose is standing beside a green sedan and is carrying a gun. Peter takes notes of minor details - the tag on the man's suit and the first two numbers of the sedan. Peter doesn't think much of the encounter until he sees the two black men, smeared with blood, running up the hill toward the car. As Peter sees Damian Rose, he picks up his speed a little - the human reaction of showing off for any audience. It's that, apparently, that saves him because the Roses are not supposed to leave...
