Summary
Chapter 13, “The Toy Salesman,” briefly details Brendan Hughes’ life after escaping from Long Kesh, when he lay low and continued to work for the Provos while living a double life as a man named Arthur McAllister. Pretending to be a toy salesman, Hughes and his contacts collected and tried to decode tapes of British officials’ phone calls with each other, but soon Hughes was arrested once more. While held captive, Special Branch operatives tried to get Hughes to become an informant for them, thinking him an invaluable tool in their fight against the IRA. Hughes refused.
