Salem Falls by Jodi Picoult is a fiction novel about a man named Jack St. Bride who is released from jail after being convicted of statutory rape. In Salem Falls, Addie Peabody is having problems with the appliances at the diner she owns, the Do-Or-Diner. She gets her cook, Delilah, and the customers to help gather snow from outside to put in the refrigerator so the food won't spoil. While they are working, Orren, a police officer, comes to tell her that her father, Roy, has been arrested. Addie goes to the police station and meets with Officer Wes Courtemanche, who tells her Roy was arrested for driving under the influence after he was caught driving a lawn mower down a highway breakdown lane while drunk.
