Chapter 9 Summary

Alice clears out some of her hotel rooms to accommodate the cast of the movie. When she goes to Ike's house to feed his dog, she finds a copy of the book, Shoola and the Sea Lion. She reads the story, written by a schoolteacher in New Jersey, about the fictional Sea Cliff Clan.

Shoola is the daughter of the chief. Eemook is deformed and is raised by an old woman, Umlalagic. Eemook and Shoola are friends. One day, the two play a game, calling the spirits of the sea. When they return to the longhouse, a huge storm frightens everyone. A stranger knocks on the door. He has yellow hair and green eyes. All the women of the tribe are fascinated. He beats Umlalagic in a shadow puppet contest by creating scary dragon.....
