Chapters 19 and 20 Summary

Alex assures Katie that she did the right thing by leaving Alex. He's trying to tell Katie how courageous she is. Katie mentions that her own father was a drunk, but that he wasn't violent. Alex ends up admitting that he loves Katie. As they continue to talk, Katie tells Alex that it wouldn't have done her any good to call the police because Kevin is a policeman with the Boston Police Department. She also admits that her real name is Erin.

Kevin is at a Memorial Day barbecue at his boss's house. He's lying to his co-workers, saying that Erin flew out again to New Hampshire to help her friend with cancer. He's explaining away Erin's absence. He watches as his boss loads the cooked burgers onto the dirty platter with grease and raw hamburger bits. Kevin's disgust increases as...
