Chapters 1-5 Summary
Jack Reacher is involuntarily at the center of an FBI investigation into the murders of former Army personnel. The FBI profiler insists the killer is a man just like Reacher, and it is up to Reacher to find the truth and set things right.
Jack Reacher waits in an Italian restaurant for his girlfriend Jodie Jacob to finish work. Two men have the owner cornered, obviously threatening the man. Reacher is alone in the restaurant, with the exception of one other couple, who looks on with interest. The men leave and Reacher asks the owner about the situation. The man states the facts, resigned that to stay in business he will have to pay protection. Reacher leaves, visits a nearby office supply store and returns before the two men.
