Love

Love is a major theme in this book. It propels the majority of the main characters actions. The reader learns that Alex Cross is in love with Christine Johnson. They share a past and have a young son together. Because of traumatic events in Christine's life, she chooses to end her relationship with Alex. He is deeply hurt and the loss affects him throughout the book. Alex blames himself and even considers changing his profession if that would convince Christine to stay with him. When Alex begins to accept Christine's decision, he dates a fellow officer. He is very attracted to her but denies his attraction out of love and loyalty to Christine. Later, when he and the officer begin to be romantically involved, he still can't forget about Christine. Alex seems to believe in monogamy and intimacy.
