Summary

Chapter 33 takes the reader back to when John was still a prospect for the Scions. Young John preferred sleeping in the outdoors and was taught how to shoot by Russell, who wanted John to learn how to protect himself. In this instance, John is chasing a man who betrayed the Scions. The club had put a mark out on him, and, in order to become a full-fledged member, John had to kill him. John wanted his father to pull the trigger on the man, and Russell did point his gun at the man's chest. Russell did pull the trigger, but the gun did not fire. In order to protect his father, John shot the man. Russell might have staged this in order to get his son to shoot the man.

When John went to dispose of the body, he saw a deer instead...
