Summary

At the beginning of Chapter 17, John is starting to feel more clear-minded, having gotten sufficient rest. However, his dreams of Beth are interrupted by the image of his victim's disemboweled corpse being sucked down the river. He then thinks about Becca and knows he will have to come to a decision on how to handle her. The reader is given the tip that Becca was sent away as a teenager because Clint needed to get her away from the Scions. A short while later, a canine team shows up behind John's barn. John knows that these search dogs have probably tracked a scent back to his property.
