In Chapter 18, Harper goes to talk with his mother about the baby, and she is very happy. At twilight, he takes Hayley for a walk in the garden and proposes to her. She agrees to marry him. They make the announcement to the others and begin to plan a wedding.

That night Hayley is sleeping with Harper, and she feels completely content. She imagines herself walking toward him in a white dress. Suddenly, she is filled with hate.
