Part 2, Chapters 27 and 28 Summary

Spring arrives in New Rochelle, and Grandfather is so overjoyed with the season's beauty that he finds himself outside. He slips, cracks his pelvis and never regains his vitality. Conversely, Harry K. Thaw finds a new life when he escapes from the State Prison Farm and makes his way to Canada. Eventually, Thaw is captured when he returns to Buffalo. He will not admit the name of his partner in the escape, just calling the man Houdini.

The real Houdini is consumed with grief over the death of his beloved mother, who died when Houdini was performing in Europe. Not being able to speak to his mother before she died wracks Houdini with guilt, and his life takes on an occult purpose as he focuses on methods of contacting the dead.
