Part 2, Chapters 16 and 17 Summary

Tateh and his daughter are now living in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where Tateh works in a mill for meager wages. The education laws are not as strict in this town, so Tateh is able to keep his daughter closed up in their flat in order to protect her from the ravages of life in a mill town. The unbearable conditions in the factories and in the tenements are endured until one day the workers initiate a strike and refuse to work.

Violence and poverty run rampant, and Tateh's concerns for his daughter rise every day. When families in Philadelphia offer to house children of the strikers, Tateh packs his daughter's belongings and waits with her at the train station. A riot ensues when the police attack the families waiting to put their children on trains, and Tateh is injured but eventually makes it to...
