Part 1, Chapters 5 and 6 Summary

The guards at the jail where Harry Thaw is being held have developed a new form of leg irons that the press announces make the facility escape proof. Harry Houdini challenges the warden. The escape artist claims that he can escape within five minutes of beings shackled. On the day of the event, Houdini is stripped naked and placed in a cell with his legs shackled. He claims he will escape and emerge fully dressed in the warden's office within five minutes.

Houdini pulls various wire implements from crevices in his feet and from his thick hair. He successfully picks the locks and frees himself. Up until this point, Houdini has not seen Harry Thaw in the cell across the hall. Thaw has removed his own clothes and obscenely shakes his genitalia through the bars at the now-escaping Houdini.
