Summary

In Chapter 11, Salma sends Thayer as a secret go-between to communicate with Dr. Smile about acquiring InSmile for Salma. By this point, Dr. Smile is aware of Quichotte’s infatuation with Salma. Dr. Smile considers letting Quichotte be the one to deliver the InSmile. At about the same time, Quichotte sends Salma another love letter, this time with a photograph of himself enclosed. Salma is shocked to see that he bears a slight resemblance to her now deceased grandfather, Babajan. Babajan was a pedophile. Salma first discovered this fact when she was 12 years old and Babajan sexually assaulted her. She later concluded that he had also likely assaulted Salma’s mother when Salma’s mother was child. The family never did anything to address these incidents, as they feared that the revelation would bring shame upon their family. Salma sometimes wonders if these abuses...
