Chapter 12 Summary
In Now, the rat-man that saved Lena and Julian from their attack in the subway tunnels has agreed to lead them out into safety. They walk in the underground tunnels for a long period of time until finally, they arrive above land near a landfill with which Lena is familiar because of a nearby homestead where she once stayed. The rat-man warns them that somebody is always watching.
Lena leads Julian to the old homestead and they hunker down for the night. Julian confesses that he chooses her and they spend the night together in the same bed.
In the Then section, the remaining Invalids walk with Tack and Hunter to find an old camp. They find a house with a family and children. They are invited to stay there and rest for two days. Lena watches how the children only know this life and how they maneuver...
