Summary

By Chapter 9 (1949), the family has returned to Osaka. Hansu and Kim Changho are again debt collectors. Hansu knows that Kim likes Kyunghee. Kim tells Hansu about his plan to return to Korea to support the new government there. Eventually, Hansu convinces Kim to meet up with a woman at a brothel he frequents. He has sex with a woman, but afterwards, he thinks of making love to Kyunghee. The next morning, Kim meets up with Kyunghee pushing the kimchi cart to the market. Kyunghee tells Kim that the boys are in a Korean school, even though Noa aims to attend a Japanese university. Kim and Kyunghee discuss the Communists in Korean who are aiming to split the country in two.
