Chapters 5-6 Summary and Analysis

In chapter 5, Gerry sneaks out of the bedroom before dawn. An hour later, Gerry calls Shirley and asks Shirley to meet him on the beach. Gerry tells his aids that he will be spending the day alone to recover from jet lag. Instead, Gerry meets Shirley far down the beach. Shirley and Gerry talk as they walk around the edge of the island. At one point Gerry stops and plays in the waves while Shirley watches, wishing she could relax enough to ride the waves with him. As they dry off on the beach, Gerry tells Shirley how much he loves her. They continue to walk, coming up to Sea World where they watch the trainers feed some of the animals. Afterward, they stop under some trees. Shirley confesses to being embarrassed to be nominated for an Academy Award...
