In chapter 5, Gerry sneaks out of the bedroom before dawn. An hour later, Gerry calls Shirley and asks Shirley to meet him on the beach. Gerry tells his aids that he will be spending the day alone to recover from jet lag. Instead, Gerry meets Shirley far down the beach. Shirley and Gerry talk as they walk around the edge of the island. At one point Gerry stops and plays in the waves while Shirley watches, wishing she could relax enough to ride the waves with him.
